Mic preamplifier MPA102 description

mpa102 front view  MPA102 back view

The MPA-102 from IMQ Stageline is a high-quality microphone amplifier for connecting microphones to a line input. This preamp also provides phantom power, as required by many microphones. As a special feature, the phantom power is also supplied in battery operation.

The gain can be adjusted in the range 20-70dB using a latching switch.

Characteristics

  • 1 microphone input, XLR, balanced.
  • Gain 20-70dB in 5dB steps
  • LED green/red for operation/peak
  • Phantom power +24V can be switched on, 48V is not available
  • Microphone phase position switchable
  • Analog filters: Lo-Cut 100Hz, Hi-Cut 12kHz, 12dB/Oct., switchable
  • 1 preamp output
  • 1 stereo line input
  • 1 stereo line output
  • Level control and panorama control for mixing the microphone signal to the stereo line channel

  • Filter, High Cut 12kHz/-3dB, 12dB/Oct.
  • Gain, Mic 20-70dB
  • Gain, stereo line 0dB
  • S/N ratio, Mic > 66dB (unweighted)
  • S/N ratio, line 80dB (unweighted)
  • Harmonic distortion < 0.01%
  • Dimensions (WxHxD) 116x55x125mm
  • Power supply 15 V~ via the included mains power supply
  • alternatively 4x9 V battery

Notes on the MPA102 preamplifier

  • The phantom power is only 24V. Some condenser microphones cannot handle this low voltage.
  • The MPA102 should definitely be operated with batteries, otherwise significant humming components will be noticeable. These are clearly visible in electrical measurements.

Set up

  • Input via balanced mic input
  • Gain dB
  • All controls vertically upwards
  • Phantom power off
  • Powered by batteries

Signal to noise ratio

Frequency 1kHz Input level 20mV RMS

SNR: 86dB Z-weighted 20-20kHz. This means that the MPA 102 is better than the manufacturer's specifications, but it is also unclear what exactly was measured, especially at what amplification.
